Ana didn’t know how long she’d been out. She only knew, as she slowly regained consciousness, that she would never forget the onrush of pleasure that had broken her apart into a million pieces and put her back together but in a new way.

She wasn’t her any more. She’d been altered.

The orgasms Caio had unselfishly lavished upon her before they’d made love couldn’t possibly have prepared her for the ultimate pinnacle of pleasure. So much pleasure. And he’d denied himself this for a whole year?

Ana became aware of movement. Sounds. Running water. She cracked open an eye. It was dark outside now. Low lights were burning in the room. The bed was empty.

And then Caio appeared in the doorway of the bathroom. There was a cloud of steam behind him. He was bare-chested and wearing a pair of sweatpants, slung low on his hips. Ana’s over-sated body tingled in response, and she felt hot when she thought of how she’d wrapped her legs around him, begging him to go deeper, harder...

She’d become someone unrecognisable. Or the person she was meant to be. With him. Except all that was too late. It was over. It had never really started. This was just...an indulgence.

She pushed aside the sudden melancholy that gripped her as Caio came over and sat down on the bed. Ana felt shy. Which was ridiculous.

‘How are you feeling? Are you sore? I’m sorry... I tried to be gentle, but I’m afraid I—’

Ana sat up, pulling the sheet up over her chest. ‘No, it was fine. It was...perfect. I had no idea it could be like that. I’m sure for you, though, it must have been a bit...boring.’

She let her hair swing forward, hiding her face a little. An old habit. Caio reached out and put it behind her ear in a gesture that made Ana’s heart thump. She felt raw in this moment. Exposed. But she forced herself to look at him.

He took his hand down. ‘It was not boring, carinho. Trust me.’ He looked as if he was about to say more, but then he stood up abruptly and said, ‘I’ve run you a bath. You’ll be a little sore, and I think you bled a little.’

Now Ana was mortified. She lifted the sheet and looked down to see spots of blood. Her face burned. ‘I’ll change the sheets.’

‘I’ll take care of that. Come and take the bath before it gets cold.’

He handed Ana a robe and she let the sheet drop so she could slip her arms into it, moving from the bed and trying to be as blasé as possible, as if she did this all the time. She imagined Caio’s regular lovers paraded around naked without a care.

She belted the robe and tried not to acknowledge how the thought of Caio’s ex-lovers and future lovers made her feel.

The bathroom was fragrant with a mixture of musky rose and something much earthier and more masculine. The bath was luxurious and filled almost to the brim.
